Although it is hard to remember sometimes, celebrities are just as human as anyone. Many celebrities are passionate about a number of societal causes and look for ways to be involved in nonprofit organizations that mirror their beliefs. One advantage that they do harness over your average Joe is that celebrities usually have the financial means to be as involved in these nonprofits as they wish. For some celebrities, their desired level of involvement is so great that they actually have started their own nonprofit organizations that they oversee, fund, and even run operations for. Here are a few mention-worthy celebrities whose passion has led them to develop organizations for some great causes. 

 

Leonardo Dicaprio – The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation

After one of his most memorable performances in The Titanic in 1997, Leonardo DiCaprio started his self-named foundation geared towards benefiting the environment. DiCaprio is very well-known for his passion for preserving the Earth and taking steps to stop the harmful effects of climate change. His foundation works internationally, funding conservation projects across the globe. 

 

Bono – The ONE Campaign

The lead singer of the popular band U2 is almost more famously known for his charitable work than his vocals. Bono co-founded the nonprofit the ONE Campaign, which aims its efforts towards ending extreme poverty and preventing the spread of common diseases, mainly in Africa and various third world countries. The organization seeks to provide clean drinking water and basic education, while exterminating extreme hunger, among many other goals. 

 

Lady Gaga – Born This Way Foundation

Partnering with her mother, Lady Gaga started the Born This Way Foundation, with goals to prevent youth bullying. The foundation looks to empower the youth with confidence and bravery, as well as inspire them to encapsulate kindness and acceptance with those around them. It is the hope that the foundation can educate the youth on the detrimental effects of bullying and encourage children to build healthy relationships with others in their community. 

 

Danny Thomas – St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital

One of the most well-known healthcare and research facilities in the country, St. Jude’s Hospital offers pediatric treatment for severe diseases as well as research towards finding a cure for these diseases. Many do not know that this nonprofit was founded by the late actor, comedian, and singer Danny Thomas. The hospital provides pro bono care to children so that their families do not need to be burdened with the cost of treatment, travel, housing, and any other monetary expenses that come with the emotional levy of these severe diseases. 

 

Oprah Winfrey – Oprah’s Angel Network

Often referred to as one of the most charitable persons in the world, Oprah Winfrey is the epitome of philanthropy. She is actively involved in a number of philanthropic nonprofit organizations but is most notably remembered for her Angel Network, which has since dissolved. At its peak, Oprah’s Angel Network was able to build homes and schools around the U.S and even across 11 other countries. The organization also provided funding towards providing education to children and restoring homes damaged in natural disasters.
